How Fix-It Clinics work

A Fix-It Clinic is a free event where you can bring broken items from home—like small appliances, electronics, toys, clothes, and more—and get them fixed! Skilled volunteers will help you figure out what’s wrong and show you how to repair it. You’ll get hands-on help with things like taking items apart, sewing, unscrewing, or opening them up. It’s a fun way to learn useful repair skills, prevent items from being thrown away, connect with others in your community, and save money!

What types of items can you bring?

Here’s a list of common household items you can bring to a Fix-It Clinic. Be sure to check with your event host to see what items are accepted. 

Typically accepted

  • Clothing or other textiles
  • Electronics (small gadgets, clocks, radios, etc.)
  • Furniture (stools, ottomans, dining chairs, etc.)
  • Jewelry
  • Lamps
  • Small household appliances (blenders, hair dryers, coffee makers, etc.)
  • Toys
  • Textile mends (replacing buttons, adding patches, mending unraveled seams, small zipper repairs)
  • Vacuums

Typically not accepted

  • Large items that cannot be carried by one person

  • Items with gasoline engines
  • Microwaves
  • Items needing a full zipper replacement (this repair isn’t available during the event due to time constraints, however some smaller zipper repairs can be done)
  • Electronics needing screen repair
  • Electronics, phones, things with expensive replacement parts, unless parts are provided by the participant and a volunteer with experience is available

Tips

  • Bring any parts you have (buttons, screws, etc.) or special tools that came with the item.
  • Some clinics stop accepting items before the event ends. Check the event details for item drop-off times.
  • Come with a willingness to learn!
